Light Contact Sparring Rules:

Ring:

  • Ring size: 20'x20'
  • Surface: Wooden floor (High School gymnasium)

Rounds:

  • Running two (2) minutes. Time is only stopped at the request of the referee.

Scoring:

  • Points will be awarded for effective and clear techniques only.
  • Techniques must have power, speed, focus and control in order to score.
  • One (1) point awarded for effective and clear hand, foot or sweep technique.
  • If contestant steps with both feet out of bounds remaining contestant in area gets one (1) point
  • First contestant to reach 3 points wins the match or whoever has most points accumulated in the 2 minute period wins the match.

Hand techniques that are eligible for scoring are:

  • Fist
  • Palm
  • Back of hand and fist
  • Knife of hand

Leg techniques that are eligible for scoring are:

  • Front kick
  • Heel kick
  • Round Kick
  • Side kick
  • Back kick
  • Hook kick
  • Spin back kick
  • Kick to upper thigh
  • Clear sweeps are allowed. If sweep fails competitor is allowed two (2) seconds to follow-up with a technique.

Contact Scoring Areas:

  • Chest
  • Stomach
  • Ribs
  • Back and side of thigh

Non-Contact Scoring Areas:

  • Side of head (no contact)
  • Forehead (no contact)
  • Back (no contact)

Contestants uniform:

  • martial arts pants.
  • T-shirt (long or short sleeve) with represented school logo on it or plain (no offensive images or language).
  • Contestant will be allocated either a blue or yellow sash to distinguish him/her for the competition

NOTE: In the Advanced ADULTS (Men and Women) divisions, light contact to the head will be allowed, HOWEVER it must not draw blood or break skin.

NOTE: Techniques to these areas DO NOT need to contact to score points.

NOTE: Techniques within one (1) inch of head/face area will score.

NOTE: Techniques that strike (contact) the above mentioned areas in the youth and/or beginner adults divisions, will be considered FOULS.

Penalties:
 

  • Contact to the head (beginner adults and youth), eyes, throat, back, knee, the inside of the thigh or groin is illegal.
  • Techniques using the head are illegal.
  • Throwing opponent (over hips or shoulders) is illegal.
  • Excessive contact is illegal
  • Repeated blows after “stop” command (by referee) is illegal.
  • Use of elbows and knees is illegal
  • Joint locks are illegal.
  • Trapping leg followed by sweeping is illegal.
  • Delayed counter strikes are illegal.
  • Takedowns are illegal.
  • Choking is illegal.

Center Referee Commands:

  • “Face me!” (Contestants face Center Referee)
  • “Bow!” (Contestants bow to Center Referee)
  • “Face each other!” (Contestants face each other)
  • “Bow!” (Contestants bow to each other)
  • “Ready!” (Contestants assume fighting stance)
  • “Kaisi!” (Contestants engage in fighting)
  • “Stop!” (Contestants stop fighting and proceed to initial position)
  • “Face me!” (Contestants face Center Referee)
  • “Bow!” (Contestants bow to Center Referee)
  • “Face each other!” (Contestants face each other)
  • “Bow!” (Contestants bow to each other. This time it would signify the end of the contest)

Referee Signals:

  • Open extended hand towards competitor – Point called
  • Cross-extended arms – Points not called
  • Pointing out of boundary – Out of bounds
  • Fist hitting open hand – Excessive contact observed
  • Fist to ear and pointing to competitor – Foul (point awarded to opponent)


Fouls:

(use of illegal techniques or contact to illegal areas)

Technical Fouls:

 (bad sportsmanship conduct such as taunting, obscene gestures, general disrespect or sideline coaching): 
 

  • First violation = WARNING
  • Second violation = DISQUALIFICATION

NOTE: Any serious foul will be grounds for immediate disqualification.

Liability:

Competitors who maliciously hurt their opponents will be held liable for any damages or injuries. The Center Referee has full authority to stop the fight at any time for safety or any other reason.
